Chungli, Taiwan
Chungli is a city in Taoyuan county of Taiwan, the Republic of China. Chungli became a city before Taoyuan
City. Historically, the city is most famous for the "Chungli Incident" of 1977 in which supporters of an
independent candidate for Magistrate of Taoyuan County, Hsu Hsin-liang, rioted after losing the election to
the Kuomintang candidate. Ethnically, Chungli is considered a kind of capital city for the Hakka people who
live here and in surrounding areas. In recent years a large number of foreign workers (mainly from the
Philippines and Thailand) have also settled in and around the city.
