Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka
Nuwara Eliya, at an elevation of 1,884 metres, was nothing but a pleasant wooded basin at the foot of the island's highest mountain until a British
hunting party stumbled upon the area in 1819. A few years later a health resort - a hill station in English colonial parlance - was established there.
Its picturesque location and healthy climate made it a popular place with pioneer settlers, the most famous being the explorer Sir Samuel Baker,
who in 1846 imported all the livestock, implements and workforce necessary to set up a typical English farm.
