Mariehamn, Finland
Mariehamn is actually a town rather than a city, the only town in, and the capital of, Aland. It represents the only port of call on the Viking and Silja
lines between Sweden and Finland. The Aland assembly is, of course, located here. It is a stunningly attractive town (that may be but it is also
a very boring town and very expensive to eat and drink) with many wide streets and a multitude of green spaces. It seems so very close to lovely
shoreside forest with a dazzling display of Spring flowers, the national cowslip being profuse everywhere. The town is very narrow from East to
West and near the big ferry terminals on the west side is the museum ship Pommern, built in Glasgow and operating in the grain trade with
Australia up to the 1930s.
